I've reconsidered this blog entry in that it seemed to be generating more heat than light. So, I've just boiled it down to this: There are only so many poses, props, and types of locations available and with millions of people taking billions of photos, similarities are going to be inevitable, but ultimately they don't matter.
As photographers, if we decide to depict something simple and obvious, we should make sure to do it with enough of our own signature style and personal twist to stand out from those who have had (or will have) a similar grasp of the obvious. And maybe most importantly, we owe it to ourselves to look beyond the obvious to the extraordinary if we really want to stand apart and create something that's going to endure. That sounds like a good goal for the year ahead. Feel free to make it your goal, too.

Agree completely. Said some of this myself, and certainly adhere to the principles. Moreover, as far as famous photography is concerned, I always favor an hommage or two. Your last para sums up the situation nicely.
